Isn't Blip.fm?

Blip.fm is a new music sharing site that I found last month. It harnesses (yes, harneses like an X-Man) the power of YouTube and other sites to make available music from all over the net in a streamlined fashion. You can find pretty much any song. BEST of all, it is Freeeee! I came across Blip.fm when I was searching for Ping.fm. I was very glad to have found it after this VERY douchy dude on whom I had a crush waaaaaay back in 7th grade (I'm 31 now) decided to give me the cold shoulder just because I expressed elation about a site -Spotify- that he suggested on Facebook. Now, Spotify is awesome. However, he somewhat jacked it up for me. However, I must give Spotify its due credit because I discovered songs by The Moments/Ray,Goodman & Brown that I'd never heard before.

I want my daddy's records

In the classically hilarious words of Pot Belly aka Bubba, friend of Fred Sanford: I want my daddy's records. As we continue to get bombarded with autotunes, shoddy covers of classic songs, and copycat artist who steal the gimmicks of predecessor; many of us are yelling: I WANT MY DADDY's RECORDS! Indeed, why pay cheap imitations when you can listen to the real thing or see it in action on YouTube?

I love going to Funk concerts. So, I have seen, in no particular order of greatness because they are also so fantastic:

- The Gap Band
- Lakeside
- ConFunkShun
- WAR featuring Latin Alliance
- Midnight Star
- SOS Band
- Average White Band
- Kool and The Gang
- Midnight Star
- Carl Carlton
- Dazz Band
- Brick
- The Time
- Slave
- Frankie Smith

ALLLLLL of them were phenomenal! I was born in the 80's and I realized that, in concert, most pop songs DO NOT sound like they do on records. They sound like crap. Most of it made me hate live versions of stuff, lol. Yet, when I was a preteen and a teenager, I began to notice that the poison of New Jack Swing had completely take over the airwaves. All of a sudden, I was hearing music that was hot was I was anywhere from 2 to 7 years old except it was only samples of it. Worst of all, there was some tired rapper or untalented hack of a vocalist singing over some of MY FAVORITE SONGS. Then, I entered the twilight zone when I realized that my peer, MY PEERS didn't know that the best part of the song, the "beat" that claim was the only reason they listened to the song, was SOMEBODY ELSE's beat to a MUCH BETTER SONG!!!!!!!!!!!! I could do a Sam Kinison scream everytime I think about that, lol.

The number of times that the Gap Band's "Outstanding" and George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" was unfreaaaaaaaaaking REAAAAAAALLLL. Po' James Brown -that man should have been a TRILLIONAIRE.

Maxwell! Maxwell! Maxwell!

I love Maxwell's music. I have been admirer of his music since I was in 10th grade back in 1996. I attended Capitol Senior High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana back then. Most of my peers were into Master P's No Limit Records. While they were jamming to "Ice Cream Man" and "Make Em Say Uhh," I was taking an "Ascension" with Maxwell. It was so not cool to acknowledge a love for Maxwell at that time at that school, lol. He was the polar opposite of the thug love and thug life that was popular with my peers but I didn't care. I knew good music when I heard it.

The first Maxwell song that I heard was "Til the Cops Come Knockin." It was love at first note when I heard that song. I loved the intensity with which he sang. I would think,"I want to marry a man who loves me with that type of intensity." The longing, the desire, the one track-minded focus on his object of affection so beautiful. It was an aurally decadent experience. One day, I told my friendgirl Frankie about the song and how I loved his music. Her reaction was that he was weird, because she thought the video was weird. I didn't have cable back then and I had no idea what he looked like. I just knew that I loved his music. My love became solidified when "Sumthin, Sumthin" dropped. I knew for a fact that I was a solid Maxwell fan. When I finally saw him, it was when I finally had money to get his album. I thought he was beautiful. I loved his hair, cheekbones, eyes, and figure. Then, THEN, the piece de resistance came when he was on the cover of a 1997 Essence Magazine. I still have that magazine! I was just awed! I had never seen anyone like him before and I loved it! At that time, Neo-Soul was still known as R&B. I just knew that I thought that he was great. When Suite Lady hit the airwaves, I wanted to meet a mini-Maxwell who was my age at the time and also into chunky, nerdy girls,LOL.

In college, I was still a Maxwell fan. His Embrya album had dropped in 1998. I loved this album. My favorite songs from it were Luxury Cococure, I'm You: You Are Me And We Are You (Pt. Me & You, Submerge, and Everwanting. In 2001, I was 21 and his album NOW was released. I loved it and so did everyone else. I was so used to being into things that most of my peers weren't, including my high school Spice Girls phase, that I was very surprised when I was into something that my peers were. For those of you from up north or anywhere but Louisiana, you wouldn't understand the gravity of the situation. By then, many of my peers were thoroughly absorbed in the Cashmoney Records craze at the time. To see Maxwell getting appreciation on all fronts was amazing and I was happy.

Now it is the end of 2010 and Maxwell is still on my mind. I have been loving his new music since his new album, Black Summer's Night, was released last year. I love Bad Habits. I have been hearing it in my head over and over. Also, I finally decided to look at the video, along with his other videos, on YouTube this month. I thoroughly enjoyed them. Bad Habits

along with his live performance of Pretty Wings on David Letterman

Luxury Cococure

and his live performance of Sumthin, Sumthin on Showtime at the Apollo

are my favorites. If I would have seen that live performance when I was in high school, I would have melted through the floor. I was watching Saturday Night Live back then, though, lol. Now, I am 30 years old and I still think that Maxwell is great. I don't have school girl crush on him anymore - at least I don't think that I do,lol. It's all about the music for me, and Maxwell's music never fails to satisfy, to be my Calgon at the end of a long day.

Loud, Loud Basses - Crazy Bass

Daedelus, electronic and experimental music dynamo, came to New Orleans to perform at the SX-NO Festival on March 19th & 20th last year. Well known for pioneering the use of the Monome with MAX/MSP for live performances, Daedelus' definitive sound is as varied as that of the many moods that one may experience in a year. Each album displays the versatility with which espouses in his music. I could go on to analyze each of Daedelus' songs however so many are too good to attempt. So, enjoy these Daedelus videos

Daedelus - Make It So

Daedelus - Just Briefly

The Moments: The Unsung Soul Singers

Hello all! It's been along time, but I have a new writing gig for the Examiner.com. By day - Educational Technology Specialist, but by night - ohhh that sweet, beautiful night - Creative Maven. Today, I am talking a about a music groups whose melodic crooning is so delicious that they are a feast for the ears! This group isssssss The Moments! Yes, that's right the moments. Their voices are hauntingly beautiful and the tracks upon which they are laid are far ahead of their time. I chose to write about them because, aside from being one of my most favorite vocal groups, I feel that they never get enough recognition.

The Moments is a group who has many had evolutions. Founding members of The Moments are Eric Olfus, John Morgan, Mark Greene and Richard Gross. After the groups first hit record, "Not on the Outside." After, they charted with such hit as "Love on Two-Way Street," and "My Confession of Love, which featured legendary DJ Frankie Crocker. In my opinion, "Love on a Two-Way Street" is one the most beautiful songs ever recorded by a man or woman. William "Billy" Brown's voice is chilling. It's beyond falsetto, because it's more pure.

After having had members come and go, the group finally developed it's most well-known ensemble with members William "Billy" Brown, Al Goodman, and Harry Ray. With this line up, the group created it's most successful hits included but aren't limited to:

If I Didn't Care
Sexy Mama
Look At Me, I'm in Love
Girls (part 1)
What's Your Name?
Making Love

Having been on the Stang Label, the group came to an impasse with owner Sylvia Robinson. Seeking more creative freedom, the group left Stang records to sign with Polydor records. As a result of Stang owning the group's name, The Moments, the group renamed itself Ray, Goodman, and Brown. They achieved some of their biggest hit ( and my favorite songs) as Ray, Goodman, and Brown including but not limited to:

Special Lady
Happy Anniversary
Inside of You
Where did you get that body baby?
Stay

Special Lady is a fun and catchy tune. Their harmonies were in such perfect sync that if they have combine to become one ultra male vocalist. The jam of all of jams is "Where Did You Get That Body?" I was in second grade when this single was released and it sound as good now as it did back then. Since, I am now an adult, I have an even deeper appreciation for their very masculine, mature voices. A close second to "Where did you get that body?" is "Girls (part 1)." In fact, it is a tie between the two. While being a disco song, "Girls (part 1)" clearly possesses strong overtones of what was to come on the 80's funk and R&B scene.

This group was and still is phenomenal. If you want to know more about The Moments and Ray, Goodman, and Brown; you gotta check out Ray, Goodman, & Brown. Now, see them in action!

Return of the Macktress

Yes, I'm back. I hadn't written a blog post in so long until it's not funny. As I was writing for my current day job, Educational Technology Examiner for Examiner.com, I realized that missed my blog. I love Educational Technology but I am a woman of many interest and this is my eclectic blog. In the beginning, it was going to be about fashion. Yet, I am more than just about fashion, also. So, You get more than fashion. You get food, art, music, LOUD, BOLD BRIGHT BURSTING COLORS, and you get some poetry too. I know alot about alot of things and I love to share even if I am just talking to myself like Christopher Williams, lol. Anything that keeps the senses hyped to get to that natural high and stay flying is my thing. So as Lakeside would say...........

By the way, I saw those guys in concert here in Baton Rouge last year. They were PHENOMENAL!!!!! Still cute too :D. If you remember me, I had my fade and was wearing my shiny gold blouse! Come back soon, because I'm ready to party!!!!
